“Nobody escapes negative emotion as it is an integral part of life to experience it. Negative emotion can become a problem when it is exaggerated and when a cycle of distress develops that is managed through alcohol use. You can learn to break this cycle and deal with negative emotion by modifying your thinking style and widening your coping strategies.”

Key strategies

Some of the strategies that the client will have already implemented (e.g. dealing with stimulus conditions, tackling craving, modifying beliefs) may have brought about a significant improvement in negative emotion. Conversely they may have exposed the client to experiencing greater levels of negative emotion, especially in those clients in whom using alcohol was the primary tool for regulating emotion. It is thus advisable to implement the strategies presented as early as possible in therapy.
